Author: Author | Filed under: Christmas Decorations Wednesday Jul 30,2008

Decorating is one of the most important and fun parts to Christmas, and outdoor Christmas decorations are always a big thing in many families. They help to light up your home and show everyone on the block that you are into the Christmas spirit.

Types of Decorations

Christmas lights are the most popular type of outdoor Christmas decorations, and there are a few categories of lights that you can choose from. LED lights are always a hit, and they are resourceful as well because they save approximately 80 per cent in electricity costs. Also if one of the bulbs on a string dies out the rest will remain lit.

Then there are also mini Christmas lights which are very inexpensive and are available in 50, 100, 150 and 200 light strings. Just remember that the maximum recommended number of lights in a continual connected string is 350 to 400 lights.

Christmas rope lights are also very popular and they are small lights that are enclosed with a rope of transparent plastic tubing. They are generally sold by the foot and with a steady rope ht Christmas lights will be glowing at a constant rate. Also there are Christmas icicle lights which most people have heard of or used before and they are basically meant to replicate the look of icicles hanging from the roof of a home. They are beautiful and inexpensive and typically come in strands of 100 or 150 lights.

Where to Look

If you are on the hunt for outdoor Christmas decorations, the Christmas Lights & Decorations Company is one that you are definitely going to want to check out. They know that outdoor Christmas decorations are an excellent way to brighten up the outside of your house and yard during the holidays, and this is why they ensure that you always have a wide and varied selection to choose from.

Another company offering outdoor Christmas decorations is the Holiday Lights and Magic Company. They offer giant Christmas displays and ornaments as well as a variety of other decorations for you to choose from.

Get Creative

If you have checked around at your options and not found anything you like, or perhaps you just feel like getting a bit creative, then there is always the option of making your own outdoor Christmas decorations. You can create a scarecrow-like figure designed as Santa Clause and put it out on the front deck or put fake snow along the edges of the windows. Your options are really only limited to your own imagination.

The Benefits of Using LED Christmas Lights

Author: Author | Filed under: Christmas Lights Sunday Jul 27,2008

There are a few different types of Christmas lights that you can choose from, but LED Christmas lights are by far the most popular. They have really garnered a lot of attention, especially over the past couple of years. They have a very distinct look and long lasting bulbs which helps to save on electricity costs over the winter.

These lights use a special type of semiconductor diode to conduct light. These lights are much more efficient for Christmas decorations and they are great because they do not require the color filters that are used in traditional lights to change the look of the light.

Cost Efficient and Safe

One of the greatest benefits of LED Christmas lights is that they are so cost-efficient. The lights are built inside of solid cases, and this helps to protect them and make them incredibly durable. On average the lights will last for about ten years which is truly impressive. If one light dies out the rest of the lights will remain lit, unlike most other types of Christmas lights.

Safety is also a major feature of LED Christmas lights, and they are much safer than other types of lights because they emit less heat so they tend to pose much less of a fire hazard when they are put on trees or when they are combined with other decorations, for instance.

Where to Look

You can generally find LED Christmas lights at any typical Christmas decorations store, and LED Holiday Lighting is one company in particular that you can check out. They specialize in patented LED lighting technology and their technology is truly unique to the industry. They are one of the best stores today for LED bulbs and light stringers, and they take a very proactive approach to where the market and industry is headed.

The Christmas Lights Etc. Company is another great option for LED Christmas lights and they offer not only a large selection of LED lights but as well battery operated lights, bubble lights, icicle lights, fiber optic lights, novelty lights, rope light, mini lights, net lights, and more.

There are many other Christmas decorations that you can purchase and use as well but Christmas lights are definitely a staple of every Christmas season. They help to light up the inside and outside of your home and show everyone that you are festive and happy to get into the Christmas spirit.

World War Made White Christmas An American Favorite

Author: Author | Filed under: Christmas Traditions Friday Jul 25,2008

Persons who continue to pine away for a white Christmas obviously love the cold weather and have no problem driving on snow-covered streets. It was apparently easy for Irving Berlin to pen the lyrics of the song sitting in the Arizona sunshine in 1940 as he wrote out his fond memories of Christmas times spent in the north. One of the oldest holiday songs in existence, White Christmas has the honor of being listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest selling single of all time.

The first public performance of White Christmas was by Bing Crosby on the Kraft Music Hall radio show, receiving spotty acclaim, but following its performance in the musical Holiday Inn in 1942 as a duet with Marjorie Reynolds, the song became a favorite, especially among the troops during World War II. In 1954, it was the theme song for the movie of the same name and cemented its place in American musical history.

The song White Christmas has achieved the status of being the most widely recorded song, having been sung by well over 100 artists as singles and as part of holiday compilations. It continues to be one of the songs most often used by Christmas carolers and during holiday specials by most performers.

Song Captivates Many With Holiday Memories

While there have certainly been numerous years with a white Christmas since 1940, the song continues to evoke strong feelings and memories, especially of those who have chosen to live in warmer climates. They may settle into their beach chairs by the ocean and sing White Christmas as they long for the days gone by. However, they show little desire to leave the warmth for a cold December in the north.

For many people, a white Christmas is part of the holiday as they were growing up and the song continues to inspire wishes for snow to begin on Christmas Eve and be melted away by the following morning. Many holiday decorations use faux snow to help create the winters scenes so often associated by with the holidays. While Bing Crosby often downplayed his role in making the song famous, here is little doubt that the version re-recorded in 1947 is more famous than the original.

During the early parts of December virtually everyone living in the north planning to celebrate Christmas, begin looking at weather patterns to see if a white Christmas is in the forecast. After all, Santa Claus Can land his sleigh easier if it has snow for the runners.

Companies Say Thanks With Corporate Christmas Gift Baskets

Author: Author | Filed under: Christmas Gift Baskets Thursday Jul 24,2008

When many companies chose to discontinue the practice of offering holiday bonuses to their employees, they started giving corporate Christmas gift baskets to all, or a select group of employees. For new workers this was simply the company’s way of thanking them for a year of hard work, but for those who had been with the company, the practice was not looked on favorably. However, the use of corporate Christmas gift baskets for workers as well as favored customers continues to increase in popularity among many major companies.

The practice of sending out corporate Christmas gift baskets has become so popular that many other businesses have sprung up to help various companies with their selection. The contents are as wide and varied as the companies choosing to use them as a way of thanking employees or customers. There may be a few companies that misuse the giving of gift baskets, hoping to receive more business from a new customer, but many appreciate the gesture.

With corporate rules of gift giving beginning to look at some merchandise gifts differently, when corporate Christmas gift baskets are received by an individual in an organization, it is often shared with everyone in the company to remove the stigma of being accepted as a promise to help the giver gain more business.

Thought Needed When Choosing Content

Even though giving corporate Christmas gift baskets is a more accepted practice, the types of gift baskets chosen must still be carefully considered. The content of the naskets no longer limited to fruit or other edibles, some of the available corporate Christmas gift baskets may be viewed as inappropriate by a few recipients. Being able to match the basket’s contents to the hobbies or likes of the one receiving the basket will make it more memorable.

For example, if sending out corporate Christmas gift baskets to another company whose leaders are avid golfers, having the basket filled with golf-related merchandise will be better accepted than one filled by memorabilia from another sport. By matching the contents of the corporate Christmas gift baskets to the recipients, it also reduces the chance of offending someone on the recipient list.

Try to remember that many of the recipients will either share their corporate Christmas gift baskets with their employees or with their families, the content and the others who may see it, should be thought through and not create an embarrassing situation for the recipient or the gift giver.

O Christmas Tree! A History of this Holiday Icon

Author: Author | Filed under: Christmas Trees Monday Jul 21,2008

It would hardly seem like Christmas without at least one tree gracing the inside of your home. Some folks even enjoy decorating multiple Christmas trees for the season, indoors and out. You can find fresh trees and artificial trees, aluminum and feather trees, and even trees that are designed to be displayed upside down. You can hang tinsels, ornaments or popcorn from its branches. You can put presents underneath and a star on top. Christmas trees are a staple of our holiday decorating today. But have you ever wondered where this holiday tradition began?

A Visit to Germany

It is not easy to trace the historic line of the Christmas tree precisely; however, it does appear that the tree as we know it today first began in Germany in the 16th century. Early reports during this time describe a small fir tree decorated with fruit, nuts and paper flowers observed in the guild house. Another reference from this time period is a description of people carrying small trees decorated with cheese and apples. However, there are also reports of Martin Luther decorating the first Christmas tree to symbolize the stars that shone brightly at night. During this same century, Riga, Latvia claims to be the home of the first Christmas tree as well.

The Evolution

By the latter part of the 18th century, it is thought that illuminated Christmas trees had come onto the scene. Since electricity had not been invented at this time, the trees were lit with candles that were stuck onto the tree branches with melted wax. During these decades, the idea of a tree as a part of holiday tradition began to spread, with many countries and cultures offering historical reports of the presence of these icons in a variety of sizes and styles.

By the late 1800’s electricity had come onto the scene, and this became reflected in Christmas tree decorating as well. A man by the name of Edward Johnson, an inventor and associate of Thomas Edison, is credited with inventing the first Christmas tree that was illuminated by electricity. Throughout the next fifty years or so, the idea of adding electrical strands of lights to the branches of the Christmas tree had taken on a life of its own, and there were new and unusual ways to light a tree getting invented every year.

The Christmas tree has a long and colorful past that has brought it to the status of one of the best known holiday icons today. O Christmas tree – how beautiful your branches!

A History of Christmas Stockings

Author: Author | Filed under: Christmas Fabric, Christmas Gifts Tuesday Jul 15,2008

“The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.” It seems that Clement Clark Moore was already familiar with the image of the traditional Christmas stockings as early as 1822, when this poem, “Twas the Night before Christmas,” was penned. But where did the idea for Christmas stockings come from, and which culture can be credited with the creation of this important holiday tradition? The answer to this question may be a bit fuzzy, since a number of different areas of the world began traditions that could have evolved into hanging Christmas stockings over the fireplace before bed on Christmas Eve.

The Dutch

The Dutch are probably the best known for beginning the ritual of hanging Christmas stockings. For this culture, the process began with children leaving their wooden shoes by the hearth on Christmas Eve, filled with straw for Santa’s reindeer. (At the time, the reindeer were known as “donkeys”, and Santa was called, “Sinterclass.”) A treat would also be left in the home for Santa, somewhere near the fire. In return, the children would find treats for them the next morning in place of the reindeer food. Eventually, these wooden shoes evolved in the Christmas stockings that we see and used today.

The Nobleman

Another story that revolves around the beginning of the Christmas stockings is that of a poor nobleman who had three beautiful daughters. This man was very sad because he hadn’t a penny to his name, which means that he didn’t have the money to offer dowries for his daughters to get married. One night, his daughters washed out their stockings and hung them over the fireplace to dry, as they had done so many nights before. However, on this night, St. Nicholas took pity on the families and dropped a bag of gold down the chimney into each of the three stockings. The father was overjoyed because now there was enough money for every one of his girls to get married, and this is how the tradition of the Christmas stockings was born.

No matter what the real story is behind the history of the Christmas stockings, it is certainly a tradition that is popular in many cultures during this time of the year. So the next time you hang your stockings “with care, in hope that St. Nicholas soon will be there,” take a moment to ponder just how this tradition came to life. It will help to pass the time, while you are waiting for Santa to come and fill that Christmas stocking to the brim with goodies. Happy holidays!

Finding Christmas Ideas To Share Joy Of The Holiday

Author: Author | Filed under: Christmas Ideas Wednesday Jul 9,2008

When it comes to celebrating, there are few bad Christmas ideas, especially if done in the right spirit of the holiday. Many like to get into the spirit of the holiday by doing something nice for other people, especially for strangers in need and angel trees are popular Christmas ideas that allow people to anonymously offer presents to young children from families without the financial means of buying presents for their children. Some of the best ideas may be suggested by the children who have the plans but not the means to execute them, counting on the adults to do the right thing.

One of the best Christmas ideas ever devised may be to offer a family going through tough times a money tree for their holiday table. A small artificial tree can be used, two-feet tall for instance, with silver coins taped to the branches as decorative bulbs and different denominations of bills intricately folded and tied on the tree as bows. These types of Christmas ideas show the true spirit of the holiday and can help the family have a reason to celebrate.

Some of the most difficult times of the year are around the holidays as people seem to believe they are expected to buy presents for a lot of people as well as provide a huge meal for their family, neither of which they can readily afford. To share Christmas ideas with others, as well as the personal bounty is one way a difference can be made in many lives.

No More Income To Offset Increased Cost

In most cases, a family will not magically have more money in December and their daily expenses will not go away just because it is Christmas. Juggling bills to make ends meet while absorbing all the additional costs is quite an act for some folks. Being able to volunteer time for others, or helping out as a volunteer for charitable organizations, may be a way to show the children in the family some of the Christmas ideas that date back to the beginning of the holiday.

Every person has their own Christmas ideas and how to spread the spirit of the holiday, but few actually take action to put the ideas in motion. One of the best ways to make things happen is with a group that shares the same philosophy and desire to help others. By getting together and discussing individual Christmas ideas, they can develop a plan to make the holiday better for others.
